Baby Monitors: How old is too old?

Baby Monitor

I’m just going to put it out there – my almost three year old has a baby monitor in her bedroom.

There.

Last week we moved Pebble from the ‘baby room’ into her own big girl bedroom, making way for Baby #2 to arrive in March 2013. Of course we kept the baby monitor in the baby room, our big girl wouldn’t be needing that anymore.

But. The first night she was in her new room we were watching TV in the lounge and we only just barely heard her calling out to us. She isn’t the kind of kid who gets out of bed in the night, and we really don’t want her to become one! So… we discussed it, and we went out and bought another baby monitor. A cheapy, on sale for an awesome price, and it does the job.

I feel kinda silly, having a  baby monitor in an almost-three year old’s bedroom, in a pretty small house – but we have always done what feels right to us, and this… well, it feels right.

At what age did you stop using a baby monitor with your kids?

  1. I know how you feel! When my eldest moved to his big boy room at age 2, we moved the monitor with him. We only swapped it back to the baby room when baby #2 came along when he was 2.5, and he was the one who was reluctant to hand it over! Admittedly we were a little too but you know what, we all got used to it. :)

  3. Our first born had a monitor until he was about 2 1/2. We moved into a bigger house and his bedroom was at the other end from ours, so I was petrified that I wouldn’t hear him if something was wrong. But he was in a big bed, so he could just come in to see us. It only took us about 6 months to realise there was no point. Our second child was so loud that he didn’t need one ;-)

  4. We’ve never used a baby monitor but that’s just purely out of choice. And when you have both twins crying, who needs one ? :)
You do what’s best for you, Kylie. You know your little girl and her needs better than anyone. xxx

  5. We did the exact same thing! We bought my 2.5 year old a noise monitor and moved the video monitor to the baby’s room. We have a 2 story house with a basement where my hubby and I hang out in the evenings. There is no way we’d be able to hear him on the top floor from the basement! He is also not the kid who gets up at night for anything, so I like to know that if he gets sick or something I can hear him.

  6. Goblin is 3 years three months and we still have a video baby monitor and have no intention of getting rid of it any time soon. It gives us reassurance that he is OK. Sometimes he wakes up crying in the night because of nightmares and we wouldn’t hear him if we were down stairs with the TV on, and I’d hate for him to be lying in his bed scared and sobbing and me not hearing him. Plus sometimes he makes a bit of a sound, we can check the monitor to see if he’s awake or just wriggling. Its not a necessity but I don’t see the rush to get rid of it. Thanks for sharing this, I bet there are loads of parents out there who will be grateful they aren’t alone in keeping theirs. I’m pinning this to the Sunday Parenting Party to spread the word thats its OK.

  7. We had a video monitor for Miss Daisy – never really needed the sound as our rooms were so close but LOVED having eyes in the room – made sure we never rushed in if she was just looking for her dummy but meant we could rush in if an arm or leg was caught in the cot. We stopped using it when we moved because it broke. She was 20 months… I loved it!
We now have just a sound one in Li’l Peppa and Miss Daisy’s room. But I only use the nightlight feature for night feeds! The receiver is not plugged in!! :) So I’m not exactly sure where we stand! :)
